What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to help with any concerns about the size, shape, or feel of the labia—the folds of skin on either side of the vagina. Things like genetics, ageing, and childbirth can change their appearance, sometimes leading to discomfort, irritation, or self-consciousness.

This surgery typically focuses on reshaping or reducing the size of the labia minora (the inner lips), though sometimes the labia majora (the outer lips) might be adjusted too, though that’s less common. It’s different from vaginoplasty, which is a procedure to tighten the vaginal canal. During a labiaplasty, excess tissue is carefully removed, and fine, dissolvable stitches are used to close the incisions. The surgery can be done under general anaesthetic, so you’d be completely asleep, or under local anaesthetic, where you’re awake but won’t feel anything in the treated area.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

While labiaplasty is often chosen for aesthetic reasons, it can also provide relief if enlarged labia cause discomfort, whether from friction against clothing, exercise, or intimacy. In fact, the procedure has grown in popularity, now ranking among the top ten cosmetic treatments for women in the UK.

  • Boost Your Confidence: A more proportionate and visually appealing labia can dramatically reduce self-consciousness and significantly improve your well being.
  • Enhance Your Comfort & Quality of Life: The results can help treat discomfort or pain.
  • Natural-Looking Results: We specialise in techniques that mimic the natural shape of your labia, ensuring a realistic and flattering outcome.
  • A Personalised Approach: We will take the time to understand your unique goals and needs and tailor the procedure to your individual situation and preferences.

Why Labiaplasty

We know that many women find that their labia can appear unusual – perhaps slightly larger, asymmetrical, or simply not quite matching their body shape. It can also be, or become, uncomfortable. This can bring a range of emotions, from self-consciousness to actual pain. Labiaplasty isn’t about changing your natural appearance; it’s about restoring a feeling of control and confidence.

Many patients experience this due to a combination of factors:

  • Changes Over Time: As we age, our bodies naturally change, and the labia can shift. Childbirth can also cause significant alterations.
  • Genetic Influences: Sometimes, our labia are simply a unique shape – a genetic predisposition that doesn’t perfectly align with our expectations.
  • Emotional Impact: It’s important to acknowledge that this can be a source of distress, impacting self-esteem and overall well-being.

Who is Suitable

Our consultant will discuss whether you are suitable for this procedure after a consultation with you about your situation.

They will need to examine your labia and assess the shape and size and what can be achieved. They will go over your medical history to better understand your concerns and their causes. At this point they will also discuss your expectations of the procedure and explain what they feel is possible for you. They will also assess your general physical and mental health to make sure you are suitable for a general or local anaesthetic procedure as required. this may include your weight and any ongoing medical conditions you have.
