Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic, Hand & Wrist Surgeon
Miss Joanna Higgins is a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon. She has been a substantive consultant at University Hospitals Dorset since 2022.
After graduating from the University of Birmingham, Joanna completed her Trauma and Orthopaedic training and was later awarded a nationally appointed subspecialist fellowship at the renowned Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. She was subsequently appointed as a Consultant at University Hospitals Dorset in 2021.
She sees patients with a range of hand and wrist conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, Dupuytren’s disease, ganglions, cysts, lumps, and selected arthritic or degenerative hand conditions.
She believes in a shared and individualised approach to treatment, taking time to explain the options available and helping each patient decide on the most appropriate plan for them. She performs many procedures under local anaesthetic and has a strong interest in improving both patient experience and functional outcomes. Alongside her clinical practice, she is actively involved in surgical education, leadership and service development within hand and wrist surgery.
